Suoni della Murgia (Murgia`s sounds) was born as a local natural evolution of “FIERI DI FIORE. TAMBORRA FESTIVAL”, an exhibition held in the city of Altamura whose main focus was to rediscover the experience of songs with social meaning from itinerant musicians to the most sophisticated musical expressions.
Named after two personalities from Altamura (the connoisseur of southern Italy culture Tommaso Fiore and the songwriter – peasant Michele Tamborra ) the event has seen his quality and importance growing year by year thanks to the work of UARAGNIAUN ( a music band) and MARIA MORAMARCO who tried to turn the festival into an opportunity to study the folk music. The growing popularity has involved even the neighbour towns.
In 2003 the town of Santeramo offered to join Altumura in the effort to promote the folk music. SUONI DELLA MURGIA, RASSEGNA INTERNAZIONALE DI MUSICA POPOLARE (Murgia`s Sounds, international folk music festival) was the fruit of the collaboration between these two towns. Several towns were involved in this project in order to put together as many cultural events as possible, and so numerous stages, where international artists interested in studying and perusing folk music traditions could perform.
The originality of SUONI DELLA MURGIA is the attempt of going beyond “la pizzica” (traditional music from Puglia) which characterises so many festivals in the region during the summer. The great number of these festivals and their frequency has led to a quality flattening that is not catching the media interest anymore. The absence of interest by the media risks jeopardizing the culture of this region.
A good opportunity to know another Puglia.
